GHG Emission
Key concerns are: deforestation, loss of biodiversity, increased greenhouse gas emissions and land right conflicts (Molenaar et al., 2010).
Land use change on peatland forest is the largers source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Indonesia (Smith et al., 2007).
- Palm oil production on CO2.
- Deforested and drained peatland are source of CO2 emissions (Hooijer et al. 2006).
- Deforestation contributes 18% of the global greenhouse gas emissions (Stern, 2006).
- GHG Emission problems when oil palm is established. It can be recovered during the oil palm production cycle (Fairhurst, T. and D. McLaughlin, 2009).
- New plantations should be developed only when the carbon displaced at planting can be recovered within one cycle of oil palm production (25 years for oil palm tree), (Fairhurst, T. and D. McLaughlin, 2009)
